Contemporary vaccination storage is a complicated business made simpler by Juan Camilo Garcia Ramirez’s elegant concept. The “Vaccine Refrigerator” is divided into three compartments that hold more than 1,000 doses of vaccines and antivenins. The different compartments can be set to different temperatures allowing the storage of several different types of vaccines and antivenins in the same appliance. The refrigerator uses a magnetic refrigeration technique and a water-cooling system. This means that it can cool the contents very quickly after being opened while using less energy than the refrigerators of today.

Many household devices consume energy, and the way we communicate with them is of great interest to me. In the United States, residential thermostats control over 10% of the nation's total energy consumption (Alan Meier, LBNL). That is roughly 3*1015 Watt-hours per year. The incredible amount of energy, greenhouse gasses, and money that can be directly linked to the energy-controlling devices that we use each day is incongruous with the antiquated technology used to control energy consumption. In this study, I am attempting to expose the rudimentary ways in which we control large amounts of energy consumption. I hope that these images will evoke a sense of how far our energy infrastructure is lagging behind other technologies.
